Have you realized that in the album Heaven is Open was the unique time that Mike addressed himself in the cover as MICHAEL OLDFIELD?
Strange thing, right? For the first time he'd write his "complete" name, so to speak. As far as I'm concerned, all of our names (given when we are born) have a meaning in our own lives.
So basically a "name" can tell us about someone's life. So the question is: What's the etymologycal meaning of Michael Oldfield Ø? 
Let's star with the his surname. Oldfield: well, many Spanish people translate his surname as "Campo Viejo" which is not incorrect. But Old field not only may be referred to an area of land (field) or the country side, it may also be referred to any area (according to my Simon & Schuster's International English*Spanish Dictionary) such as field of "snow", "ice", etc or even an "extension" (sea and sky).
So if it can be an extension of the sea and sky, I personally think that Oldfield would then mean "extension of the sky" or in other words, "Universe" 
Now, let's see the name Michael. From the Hebrew name (Mika'el) which means "who is like God". This is the name of one of the seven Angels in Hebrew tradition and the in the Bible. In the Book of Revelation he is portrayed as The Leader of Heaven's Armies, and thus is considered the patron saint of soldiers.
What's more, The War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness (connected to Light + Shade?) is a manual for military organization and strategy that was discovered among the Dead Sea Scrolls. It is also known by the names "War Rule", "Rule of War", and "War Scroll". These scrolls contain an apocalyptic prophecy of a war between the Sons of Light and the Sons of Darkness. The war is first described as an attack by the Sons of Light against Edom, Moab, the sons of Ammon, the Amalekites, Philistia, and the Kittim of Asshur (referred to as the army of Belial, i.e. incarnated demons), supported by those who "violated the covenant and the forbidden fruit" including the sons of Levi, the sons of Judah, and the sons of Benjamin.
The war is then described again as a conflict between the congregation of the gods and the congregation of demons.
Short description of The War Scroll:
Although this war is said to extend over forty years, the writer of the scroll was particularly concerned with the details of the very final day of battle. After six bloody engagements during this last battle, the Sons of Light and Sons of Darkness are deadlocked in a 3-3 tie. In the seventh and final confrontation "the great hand of God shall overcome Belial and all the demons of his dominion, and all incarnations in human bodies shall be destroyed forever" (1QM 1:14-15).
Along the way, in true apocalyptic fashion, the scroll goes into elaborate detail concerning the battle trumpets (2:15-3:11), banners (3:12-5:2), and operational matters (5:3-9:16). Priestly prayers for the various phases of the conflict are corded next (9:17-15:3). Finally, the seven savage engagements of the final day battle are detailed (15:4-18:8, culminating in a ceremony of thanksgiving on the day following the victory (18:1-19:14).
Ultimately, God's purpose was to exalt the Sons of Light and to judge the Children of Darkness. The message is one of hope. In the face of such perverse evil, the Sons of Light are encouraged to persevere to the end. God was preparing to intervene and bring a permanent solution for the problem of evil.
The scroll itself is one of the first seven texts found by the Bedouin in 1947.

Recapturing the topic on the etymologycal meaning of names, Michael means "Who is like God" and I'd just personally modify it simply as: "God".
Now, the complete meaning of Michael Oldfield is therefore: "God in the Universe" or "Sirius in the Universe".
Remember the God constellation? Sorry..."Dog"constellation? 
or Dog Star? That's why that dog in Five Miles Out album...or Amarok (heavenly Wolf identified with Sirius star) or Tubular Bells, remember that since ancient times the bell has represented the "presence of God". That's why oriental people have so many bell sounds in their traditional music, including in their religion. Also Christians and Catholics "relate" the bell as the presence of God, in all the churches there are bells in a high position Ø
